New Street Café Finds a New Brew

After 30 years the New Street Café in Windsor has had a major transition thanks to new owner Stephanie Elliot. Stephanie took over in 2016, and during the end of year Christmas break, renovated with a fresh new look and giving the café a new name – Brew & Co.

A former music teacher, Stephanie’s passion for coffee encouraged her to step out into this new venture, and with the help of her family, (and numerous trips to Bunnings and Ikea), the fresh new look and menu is attracting locals and visitors alike.

Brew & Co has plenty of seating inside and out. Outside is nicely shaded in the warmer months while inside you can settle yourself into a comfortable reading corner and stay a while with a coffee and good book.

Stephanie loves the community aspect of owning a café, getting to meet new people and building friendships with regular customers. Her Head Chef Tara however is much more at home in the kitchen, whipping up a latest creation to add to the modern menu.

Their coffee is a strong and full-bodied house blend.  Breakfast boasts all your favourites, from humble toast with a range of bread options, including gluten free, to eggs benedict, pancakes, and the healthy and filling veggie breakfast. Two slices of 7 Seed Loaf are generously topped with hearty mushrooms, sautéed spinach, super sweet oven roasted cherry tomatoes, and decorative avocado which presents beautifully. My palette did however desire a bit more seasoning, so I added this to taste.

Lunch includes a range of melts, gourmet sandwiches including a stacked club sandwich, salads and gourmet burgers. The signature Lamb Burger is accompanied by thickly cut chips, which are crispy on the outside and fluffy mash on the inside. The burger itself is an Aussie delight. The lamb is not too thick and heavy, allowing for a good balance with the tomato chutney, baby spinach and house made aioli. This burger is fancy enough to eat with a knife and fork, but casual enough to pick up with your hands, although if you do – just be ready with a napkin to mop up the juiciness.

There are a number of sweet treats on offer at Brew & Co but their Apple Pie is amazing. The huge slice needs, not one, but two scoops of ice cream, making this a meal in itself with a cup of coffee. Big chunks of apple are doused in caramel like cinnamon spiced syrup, and encased loosely in a buttery lattice style pastry that feels like you’ve stepped back in time to the colonial era.

Located just off the main street in Windsor, and only a short walk from the river, Brew & Co provides a great stop for breakfast or lunch. If it’s a nice day, there’s no better way to experience the local area than getting something to take away, walking up and sitting by the river under the trees.
