Ecletic Country ChicA cosy coffee haven in the heart of Parramatta

In the thriving strip of coffee shops that is rapidly populating Horwood Place Parramatta, sits a quirky yet comfy place of homeliness. Offering inexpensive yet creatively hearty meals, the smell of cinnamon and coffee hits you right from the street.

Paper Plane Café opened in February 2014 by partners Carla Soriano and Ben Mora. After taking a six month sabbatical from their accounting careers they felt they wanted to do something
else in life, and so began their new direction as café owners.

With an aim to provide more than you expect, Carla and Ben hope their customers feel as welcome as they would in a friend’s home where they’ve put out a huge spread for you to enjoy. Their desire to make you feel like an invited friend begins straight away, with warm and sociable staff ready to find you a seat and share with you about the extensive menu.

Eggs Your Way’ – scrambled, poached or sunny side up on Organic Sourdough Toast with sautéed spinachThe All Day Breakfast menu begins with ‘Eggs Your Way’ – served scrambled, poached or sunny side up on Organic Sourdough Toast. You can add any sides to make it your own so I ordered mine poached and added the sautéed spinach which was tasty, seasoned perfectly, and definitely not overcooked.

The Smashed Avocado and Poached Egg certainly sounds interesting as it includes peas, mint, goats cheese, tomato and fresh lemon juice. Or you can fancy it up with the Scrambled Eggs with Truffle Oil, tomatoes, mushrooms and a side of rocket parmesan salad.

For something sweet the French Toast comes with a completely different twist, as there is not a hint of maple syrup in sight. Rather the sweetness comes from strawberries, with a tang of rhubarb compote, offset nicely by a creamy rich vanilla custard. Add the spice of cinnamon sugar and some crunchy crushed pistachios and you have the perfect flavour combination.

However if you prefer your French Toast savoury, then The Monte Cristo will not disappoint with ham, turkey, cranberry sauce and swiss cheese melted between two piece of French toast – Mon Dieu!

sliced beef on artisan sourdough bread with swiss cheese, garlic aioli, rocket, caramelised onion and a side of ‘bad boy’ chipsThe focus on sauces and cheeses is exemplified in their lunch menu including the Steak Sandwich of sliced beef served on artisan sourdough bread with swiss cheese, garlic aioli, rocket, caramelised onion and a side of ‘bad boy’ chips. Other lunch items include a Smoked Salmon Salad with bocconcini and lemon crème fraiche dressing, a Coffee Rubbed Beef Burger, and Carne Asada Fries – their divine ‘Bad Boy’ chunky chips topped with beef, salsa, smashed avocado, jalapenos and sour cream.

You’ll feel like you’re in a New York Deli in Greenwich Village when you try The Reuben – silverside beef, topped with swiss cheese, sauerkraut, pickles and thousand island dressing on rye bread with a hearty side of those ‘bad boys’.

Their coffee, by Numero Uno, meets high standards and all the usual selections are available amongst other hot drinks including loose leaf teas and Prana Chai Masala Tea served with Soy Milk. Cold drinks include freshly made Orange or Watermelon Juice, along with milkshakes, soft drinks, iced coffees and teas and a Homemade Strawberry Lemonade.

Hipster meets Country ChicEverything about this rustically sweet café is visually pleasing – a real sight for the senses. This country style relaxed space becomes hive of popularity for business meetings during the week, and a cool hangout for locals on the weekend.
